Aquaman, the King of Atlantis, has never found a true home in either of the worlds that he was born of. In his undersea realm, Aquaman is both King and outsider. And in the surface world, he's a hero and an outcast.

In this brand new series by fan-favorite writer Dan Abnett (Titans Hunt) and all-star penciller Brad Walker (Sinestro), the King of Atlantis attempts to broker a peace between Atlantis and the surface, but this noble quest might force Aquaman to finally choose whether to live his life above the waves, or below them. Plus, Black Manta makes his bloody return and seeks to destroy everything and everyone Aquaman loves!

I am of two minds with this read…

On the one hand, I really did not like it; on the other hand, I can see how someone who has never read Aquaman would like it.

For the average Aquaman comic book reader, Rebirth is like every other Aquaman story – he’s torn between Atlantis and the US, he’s hated by everyone, and Black Manta is there. This re-imagining actually involved zero imagination and I was super bored reading it.

For the new to Aquaman comic books reader, Rebirth is a great place to start the Aquaman story! The first book explains Aquaman’s situation – that he is hated, and some reasons why – and opens up the issue of being torn between his two worlds. If you are new to DC or just to Aquaman, this is definitely where you would like to jump in!

Also, for both parties, the art is awesome!! Seriously, everything that I have read in the Rebirth series has had really, truly amazing art! I don’t know if they have hired all new artists of amazing caliber, or if everyone has suddenly upped their game, but WOW!

Check out my previous posts from the DC Rebirth Universe, and keep your eyes peeled for the ones I have coming up!!

  • I should probably try some graphic novels. I’ve always been interested in them but…I probably won’t start with this one. Any suggestions for where to start? Thanks for sharing your thoughts though, Amanda! 🙂

  • Looks good. After watching the Justice League trailer, Jason Momoa is going to be the only Aquaman I ever see from now on. 😀

  • I need to pick this one up, soon! I’ve never been an Aquaman fan, but I’ve heard so many good things about his Rebirth part. Great review! 🙂
