Kasie West meets Morgan Matson in this hilarious and heartwarming debut about a girl’s summer mission to get over her ex-boyfriend by kissing her way through the alphabet.

Breaking up with her boyfriend is not how Veda planned on starting her summer. When Mark makes it clear that it’s over between them, Veda is heartbroken and humiliated—but, more importantly, she’s inspired. And so she sets out on the love quest of a lifetime: use the summer to forget about Mark, move on, and move up. All she has to do is kiss twenty-six boys with twenty-six different names—one for each letter of the alphabet.

From the top of the Ferris wheel at her hometown carnival to the sandy dunes of Lake Michigan, Veda takes every opportunity she can to add kisses (and boys) to her list, and soon the breakup doesn’t sting quite as much. But just when Veda thinks she has the whole kissing thing figured out, she meets someone who turns her world upside down.

By turns hilarious and heartbreaking, Anna Michels’s debut is the story of one girl who realizes that moving on from the supposed love of your life means taking a chance—and having the courage to love again.

Vee went through a break up but she’s still hung up on her ex. Her best friend, Mel, comes up with a plan: to kiss her way through the alphabet, meaning find guys with names that start with each letter of the alphabet (must be done in order) so she can get over her ex.

When I started this story, I was enjoying it quite a lot. The kissing challenge felt off but I kept on going with it and it was actually fun. But then it took a very bad turn and it stopped being fun. The challenge stopped being fun when a guy shows interest in Vee and she is interested in him, but because she puts this relationship “on hold” because she has to finish the challenge. Another thing is Vee kisses the guy her best friend likes, knowing she likes him! I mean, where’s the loyalty?!

I almost can’t believe twenty-six kisses went from being a dumb way to shock myself into getting over Mark to something that actually mattered—that showed me there’s no one perfect  guy for me […] That the most important thing you can do is love yourself, and other people will follow your lead.

I just don’t see how doing this challenge can make you love yourself more. I mean, she hurt people while she was doing the challenge and she acted like she cared but at the same time, she continued doing this thing that wasn’t a good idea to begin with and now she says she loves herself. I just… I can’t.

About Anna Michels

When I was writing 26 Kisses, I asked myself, "If you could be seventeen again and be kissed anywhere by any guy, what would happen?" My favorite scenes in the book grew out of that question--scenes that are stuffed to the gills with the sights, sounds, and smells of summer, and the fluttery feeling you really only get with a first kiss. I loved writing 26 Kisses, and I hope you love reading it!

First loves. Last Wishes. Letting go.

Seventeen-year-old Maddie O'Neill Levine lives a charmed life, and is primed to spend the perfect pre-college summer with her best friends and young-at-heart socialite grandmother (also Maddie's closest confidante), tying up high school loose ends. Maddie's plans change the instant Gram announces that she is terminally ill and has booked the family on a secret "death with dignity" cruise ship so that she can leave the world in her own unconventional way - and give the O'Neill clan an unforgettable summer of dreams-come-true in the process.

Soon, Maddie is on the trip of a lifetime with her over-the-top family. As they travel the globe, Maddie bonds with other passengers and falls for Enzo, who is processing his own grief. But despite the laughter, headiness of first love, and excitement of glamorous destinations, Maddie knows she is on the brink of losing Gram. She struggles to find the strength to say good-bye in a whirlwind summer shaped by love, loss, and the power of forgiveness.

I rarely DNF so I’m practicing this habit because I have way too many books to read, like many other people.

I’ll keep this short. I started this book and was actually liking it. I especially liked Grandma! She was a fun grandma for sure. Then we got to meet more of… I forgot her name (that’s how much I was paying attention to this) *searches name* Maddie! That’s her name. Anyways, the more I got to know her, the more I disliked her, but I kept read for the sake of the other characters.

Janie got on my nerves so that’s another character that I don’t like. Then there’s this Enzo guy… I got skeptical of him very quickly. And, am I the only one who thinks of Enzo (the actor) from The Vampire Diaries? Because he’s all I keep picturing for book-Enzo.

I disliked how Maddie got around Enzo. That’s actually where I stopped reading, when they met up at his cabin. It’s just so… Vomit-inducing. I know I know. It’s disgusting. But seriously, I just wanted to gag.

Also, a cruise ship that lets you commit suicide? I mean, sure you have to be dying and just want to do it on your own terms, but… Seriously? Sure, the idea was original, but still. I couldn’t grasp this at all.

Everything else felt so superficial. Sadly, this wasn’t for me.

About Carrie Firestone

Carrie Firestone has lived in rural, urban, and suburban places, and, while she currently lives in the suburbs, she is decidedly a CITY person. She loves parties, and all kinds of music, and books about random people doing random things in random places. She loves to travel with her husband, and two daughters, Lauren and Emily. When she isn’t writing, you might find her reluctantly sharing her popcorn at the movies, trying to get people (or dogs) to do a conga line, or adding items to her loose ends list.

  • Oh man sorry these didn’t work for you!! I thought the first one sounded cute but if it stopped being fun then that stinks!

  • I’ll admit to being a little bit wary when it comes to 26 Kisses, but I still requested but I haven’t been able to pick it up. I don’t think I’ll be able to now. The kissing the guy your BFF likes is the absolute worst. And yeah, I definitely don’t see how the kissing challenge helped her appreciate herself more. Also how did she not contract mono?

I didn’t even like the grandma in Loose Ends! Everyone annoyed me, but I was especially bothered by how everyone tried to shame the MC for being a virgin. They kept bringing it up like it was a seriously weird thing. -_- I didn’t even get to meet Enzo, but I doubt I can handle more of this book.

Sorry these didn’t work for you, Gen!

    • I really don’t think you’d like 26 Kisses. The girl is very shallow and selfish and ugh! I ASKED MYSELF THE SAME QUESTION!!! How about Herpes?!

Enzo was about to fully be introduced a few more pages after you stopped reading. He was the guy that Maddie would see around the cruise but never really talked to him.

  • Great review — even though I finished The Loose Ends List, it did not get better and Maddie is AWFUL! I couldn’t believe the way she was acting especially since her Gram was so great! Ugh, I still get mad about it — my review will be up next week. I do not have anything good to say about Maddie haha

Sorry 26 Kisses also did not work for you!

    • Maddie was a horrible MC! I couldn’t deal with her. Gram was the only one I liked haha

  • I finished The Loose Ends List, but I don’t know why. I did not like it AT ALL!
