For most of us it’s hot outside, and that means actually spending time out of doors. I love when the weather gets warmer because that means I can sit by the pool and read. I used to enjoy going to the beach to read, but now that I don’t live anywhere near the beach I have to make do with a pool.
Since it’s warm outside, I thought I would share a list of books I think would be perfect to read by the pool this summer. Some of these books are new or are coming out this summer, and some are backlist that I think are great pool reads.
If you want to read YA
Save the Date – Everything Morgan Matson writes is the PERFECT summer read. Her books are usually set in summer, and her characters are so relatable. This book takes place during a weekend, and surrounds the family as they secrets are unearthed and the wedding doesn’t go according to plan!
The Way You Make Me Feel – I haven’t read Maurene Goo yet, but the premise of this book sounds SO CUTE! It’s about a girl working in her dad’s food truck over the summer. Not only does the premise sound fun and summery, but the cover is beautiful as well.
From Twinkle with Love – I read Sandhya Menon’s debut when it came out, and loved it, and I’m sure this one is just as cute! I don’t know much about this except that it’s told in an epistolary format, and it has something to do with a mistaken identity??
Love & Luck – Not only is the cover of this BEAUTIFUL, it’s set in Ireland! If you’re not able to travel this summer, this may be a perfect book for your wanderlust.
If you want to read romance
Bad For You – I haven’t read anything by J. Daniels yet, but I’ve heard that her books are amazing. This is the third book in a series, but can be read as a standalone and is supposedly super swoony! This comes out in July, and seems like such a fun book to read by the pool or at the beach.
The Kiss Quotient – Tbh this book is fantastic year round, but I also think it’s a perfect book to read while sitting outside. There’s something so fresh about it, and the characters are so amazing.
It Takes Two – I already read the first book in the Bridesmaids Behaving Badly series outside, so I know this will be just as enjoyable while sitting by the pool. Like most romance series, this book can be read as a standalone. It follows two more characters from the Bridesmaids Behaving Badly series during wedding planning. Also, Jenny Holiday is hosting a read along to the first book this week to get ready for the release of this second installment!
The Wedding Date – Another steamy romance to read while it’s hot outside. This is a perfect summer read because it’s super swoony, the characters are amazing, and it’ll be a fun book to read/reread before the release of Jasmine Guillory’s next book coming out later this year!
If you want to read memoirs/nonfiction
The Girl Who Smiled Beads – Such a great memoir of a woman recounting her experiences as a refugee escaping during the Rwandan genocide. This is such an emotional book, the author shares so many personal experiences that at times can be difficult to read.
The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck – A super chill book to read while laying out by the pool. This is a self-help book that teaches you how to stop caring about the things that don’t matter so you can be happier. I haven’t read this yet, but it’s one of the books I’m planning to read soon!
We’re Going to Need More Wine – Gabrielle Union’s book is perfect to read by the pool because even though she talks about difficult topics like rape/racism/colorism, she does it in a way that feels like you’re talking to your friend, not being talked down too. It’s also a book that talks about these issues in a very positive way.
So Close to Being the Shit, Y’all Don’t Even Know – Another book I cannot wait to get to while sitting outside. This is Retta’s memoir, and it’s supposed to be HILARIOUS! I loved her character on Parks and Rec, and can’t wait to learn more about this actress/comedian.
If you want to read fiction
Where’d You Go Bernadette – This is supposed to be a light, easy to read book that should be fun to read by the pool. I’ve heard nothing but good things about it! Not only does the story sound like something I’ll enjoy, the cover is awesome and definitely screams summer read.
Big Little Lies – Even though this is a mystery/thriller type book, I think it’s light enough to be fun to read by the pool. There’s something about the atmosphere and plot of the book that just sounds like it’ll be fun to read outside.
Little Fires Everywhere – I keep hearing about Celeste Ng and how great her writing is. This is a contemporary novel that I think would be excellent to read by the pool. While other books may be light and breezy, this is the perfect read if you want something a little more serious.
