Surrounded by enemies, the once-great nation of Ravka has been torn in two by the Shadow Fold, a swath of near impenetrable darkness crawling with monsters who feast on human flesh. Now its fate may rest on the shoulders of one lonely refugee.

Alina Starkov has never been good at anything. But when her regiment is attacked on the Fold and her best friend is brutally injured, Alina reveals a dormant power that saves his life—a power that could be the key to setting her war-ravaged country free. Wrenched from everything she knows, Alina is whisked away to the royal court to be trained as a member of the Grisha, the magical elite led by the mysterious Darkling.

Yet nothing in this lavish world is what it seems. With darkness looming and an entire kingdom depending on her untamed power, Alina will have to confront the secrets of the Grisha . . . and the secrets of her heart.

Shadow and Bone is the first installment in Leigh Bardugo's Grisha Trilogy.

I feel pretty confident saying that everyone has at least heard of this trilogy, if not already started or finished reading it! Honestly, when MC and I started talking about doing a group read for this series, we definitely had way more people telling us we would love love love it, than people joining us!

HOWEVER, IF YOU ARE ONE OF THE FEW LEFT WHO HAVE NOT READ THIS, SKIP DOWN TO READ ALONG INFO TO AVOID SPOILERS.

And to those of you who have read this book, I say, did you forget the first two-thirds of this book when you said that?!?!

Seriously y’all, it took me OVER A MONTH to read this book! It should have taken, at most, a weekend… this book is a quick read – a friend of mine read it in one sitting! – but for the life of me, or the read along, I could not do it. Up until the tail end of chapter fifteen, this book reads like it is just another love triangle, misunderstood bad boy, mouse girl turned babe, everyone is happy in the end, pile of Twilight nonsense. I could not “ugh” enough throughout the month of December.

BUT THEN!

I AM IN!! LET’S FREAKING DO THIS!!!

From that point on, I’ve been hooked – do you hear me, Ary? I’m hooked! – this book definitely pulls a fast one on the reader, suddenly turning out different! Everything gets super intense for the last third, and I was stoked to finally be reading a super hyped YA book that has a legit bad guy, and no love triangles!

Don’t get me wrong, An Ember in the Ashes has a legit bad guy or two (so far in the series), and the love triangle fades away pretty quickly; The Bone Season series definitely has a bad guy – or in this case, female-ish, but love triangles had their moment in both of those, as did the bad-guy-who-is-the-good-guy. Shadow and Bone is the first book I can think of, that I have read – the key here being that I have read, not that was written or published or read by anyone on the planet – that did not have a love triangle, that has a bad guy who is just a legit shit, and a heroine who goes from mouse to bad ass!

Gawd do I hope that this series holds up to those last handful of chapters or I will be the first person in history to run a read along for books I’ve had to put on my DNF list! LOL.

  • I promise, the books get better as the series progresses, so Siege and Storm and then Ruin and Rising are amazing 😀 I hope enjoy them all 🙂

      Hi Brittany! Good to know!!

  • I haven’t gotten around to reading ANY of the books in this series, although I do have them all, as well as Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom. I don’t know why I’ve been so lazy..I need to go back through my books and start reading some of the older titles that I’ve purchased and shamefully neglected over the years! I skipped the majority of your review so I didn’t hit any spoilers, but I’m definitely interested in the read along!

I was just telling Kelly (one post down) that you could catch up very easily for the first chat of the second book in about two weeks!!

  • Oh yay, I am SO glad that you ended up liking it! I was late to this party too, but so glad I gave it a chance! I enjoyed the second and third book just as much too, so I really hope you do as well (though hosting a readalong and not reading would be kind of funny bwhahah) Great review, can’t wait to hear what you think of the rest!
