Genesis’ Top 16 Reads of 2016

This year I read sooo many great books! But I was picky with which one made it to the 2016 Fave list and 27 books made it! Trying to cut it down to only 16 was tough but I survived *pats back* (Links lead to reviews or Goodreads page)

All the feels

Someone Like You is definitely on my top 5 fave reads of 2016. It’s so packed with feels, it tore my heart apart and then put it back together. It’s so achingly beautiful and it’s Lauren Layne’s best book to date. Bring Me Back is Micalea Smeltzer’s most heart-breaking book yet, but it’s also filled with hope. I wasn’t expecting the heartbreak I would get and all the denial I would go through but in the end, she wrote the perfect resolution to such a painful story.

Sexy and fun

Out of Bounds was such a sexy novel! There’s this yoga scene that had me with my mouth wide open and needing a fan. It was so hot! A Place in the Sun was a hilarious novel that I really loved. It transported me to Vernazza, Italy, a place I didn’t know existed but now NEED to go! Hard Hitter was my second novel by Sarina Bowen and it did not disappoint! It’s my fave out of the two I’ve read. Undecided is THE definition of New Adult! It was so much fun to read (I read it twice this year) and I’ll be re-reading it again very soon! For Better or Worse had the title of best LL book but Someone Like You took its place. Still, this book was cute, funny and with amazing group of characters that I wish I was a part of.

Thought-provoking

After I Do had me in tears! This novel taught me so much about myself and about my relationship. I still re-read my favorite quotes over and over. It’s a high rec from me. One True Loves had me skeptical in the beginning but I’m glad I kept reading because it was wonderful! TJR had me feeling quite a lot and I wasn’t expecting it. How It Feels to Fly is a very important novel that every teen and adult should read. It deals with body image and anxiety. I related a lot to the MC’s anxieties. In the end, I loved the outcome of everything. It’s very welly written.

Angsty (yet so good!)

Corrupt… Where do I begin? I didn’t know what I was getting into until it hooked me in and I finished reading at 2 AM! It’s a genre I normally don’t read but Penelope Douglas had me yearning for more! It’s beyond angsty and my heart was close to exploding but the ride is so worth it. And the sauna scene😍.  Change of Heart grabbed my attention from the start and it was another late night read. The first sex scene had me fanning myself and eagerly anticipating the rest of the sex scenes ;D Plus the romance had me swooning like crazy! Paper Princess is a book I thoroughly enjoyed. It has angst, fun moments, badass characters, great friendships, amazing romance. Honestly, it has everything! Nowhere But Here was my first read and my first 5 stars of the year and my first Katie McGarry book! She did not disappoint me at all! I loved the motorcycle club, the closeness of family that’s not blood-related, the romance, and the added suspense!

Cute and adorable

P.S. I Like You was so beyond cute and adorable! I literally read it in one sitting (I didn’t get up from the couch until I was done). It reminded me so much of my elementary, middle school, and high school years! If you’re looking for a cute novel to read on a warm or cold day, looking to cheer you up, this one is for you!

The ones that fit all of the categories above

Addicted After All and Long Way Down are two books that I absolutely loved! It’s no secret that the Addicted/Calloway Sisters series are my favorites and I always recommend them. I’ve gotten so unbelievably attached to these characters. I feel like they are real. They became a part of me and I’m not ready to let go (it’s why I haven’t read the epilogue novel. I don’t want to say goodbye *sobs*). They will always hold a special place in my heart.

Amanda’s Top 16 Reads of 2016

Series!

An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir (series)
This series has 2/4 books out thus far, and I rated them 4 and 5 stars, respectively!

I do not want to say much more than that because my review goes live soon!
BUT
I NEED MORE!!! Write faster, Sabaa!!

A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas (series)
Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas (series)
Is there anyone left who has not read the Mass series’?! You know, other than Gen! Lol.
The final book in both series’ will be out in 2017 and I am DYING for them!! I discovered Maas this year, and she now owns me!

The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon (series)
Another incomplete series that has sucked me in! Honestly, I really try not to read a series until it is complete, but 2016 has pretty much been my year of breaking my own rules! There are 2/7 books released thus far, number 3 will be released in March 2017, and the world building is AMAZING! I will have a review up in January for books one and two, and another for book three shortly before the release!

Feels, Feels, All of the Feels!

Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell
Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell
Kindred Spirits by Rainbow Rowell
Eleanor and Park was my introduction to Rainbow Rowell and it swept me off of my feet!!! I felt all the feels reading about this old school, high school couple and immediately bought Rainbow’s entire works!! No regrets here because Fangirl is all of us! It is the story of every book nerd girl!

See Me by Nicholas Sparks
Like all of Sparks books, See Me is a quick read that pulls at your heart strings but leaves you floating on a cloud by the end! I love a Sparks books for being reliable, interesting, easy reads – perfect for getting out of a reading slump! (it’s that last fact that earned it it’s spot here)

Love and Gelato by Jenna Evans Welch
This is another light, quick read! The detail Jenna put into the description of places around Italy is AMAZING! After this book, I wanted to immediately go to Italy and have an adventure! I think my favorite part of this book, however, is the journey our young MC goes through after the death of her mother. Welch did not sway too far from what, I think, is a pretty realistic journey of self-discovery!

Like No Other!

Furthermore by Teherah Mafi
Teherah Mafi is a genius! This is a middle-grade book but that should definitely not stop anyone of any age from reading it! It is written in a whimsical style that sucks you in and makes you feel as though you are bouncing from word to word, page to page! The world building, the detail, the subtle yet not-so-subtle commentary on human beings today… I cannot say enough about how great this book is, nor can I say enough about this NEEDING to be a required reading in schools!

Ready Player One by Earnest Cline
Go immediately, purchase this book, and read it! Cline’s dystopian future world based entirely around a fully immersive ’80s reference filled video game is INSANE! Selfishly, I am not going to say more than that because I have a forthcoming review, but go, go get it, read it, and when my review comes, talk to me about it!

I Wear the Black Hat by Chuck Klosterman
Klosterman is an auto-buy author for me! His works are non-fiction collections of essays that speak to the current political, economical, and social climate in a way that is humorous and reachable for the average human!
This is another one that I do not want to say much about here because I have a review coming up!

Book to Film!

Room by Emma Donaghue
The Revenant by Michael Punke
Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson
American Sniper by Chris Kyle
I won’t say much about these last four because they were made into movies and therefore have been talked about enough! I will just say this:
They are in my top 16 reads of this year for a reason!
I saw the movies, I liked the movies, I do not care about the movies! I do care about these books! They are all amazing books! Did you even know that The Revenant
is mostly true?! *boom* mind blown!

  1. These lists make me realize how many books I still need to read! I’m posting a top 10 of 2016 next week and it’s so hard. I had to cut down so many great books that just couldn’t make the list. So sad! lol

  2. You guys – so many good books!!!! Love seeing TJR and Rainbow Rowell on your lists. They are two of my favorite authors. I am relistening to Fangirl right now and loving i all over again. RPO was one of my favorites last year – such a fun and different read. I still need to read so many here though! Great lists ladies!

  3. I love your book picks for 2016! I loved Undecided it was such a great read and I can’t wait to read her next book! Also, I started with Eleanor and Park this year and now can’t stop with Rainbow Rowell I love her books!!!

  4. Ooh great lists, both of you. Lauren Layne worked her magic with Someone Like You so that’s definitely on my best of 2016 list but I’m right there with you both on the following: P.S. I Like You, all of the Rainbow Rowell books, all of the Lauren Layne books and Undecided was another fabulous read. I still have Hard Hitter to read and I’m looking forward to it so I’m glad to see that you enjoyed it, Gen.

I hope you guys have a fantastic 2017, I’m looking forward to more great blog posts from the both of you.

  5. Oooh great lists! I am so behind in series, I am looking at Amanda’s list like “I am NOT CAUGHT UP!” I need to read Torch, ACOMAF, and EoS… kind of putting of EoS at the moment because I was pretty bored by QoS- and it is long hahha. I also STILL haven’t read any Rainbow Rowell books OR any Taylor Jenkins Reid books even though I neeeed to. I REALLY liked How it Feels to Fly from Gen’s list, and Love and Gelato was cute from Amanda’s. Great picks, glad to see you both enjoyed so many books this year!
